SUMMARY
I worked with YellowTin as a UX Design Intern, aiming to improve the onboarding process and brainstorm design solutions for an unforgettable user experience.
YellowTin holds a special place in my heart, being my first opportunity to interact with a real team and real users. I was tasked with not only redesigning the user dashboard to implement new features, but also conducting user research, analyzing behavior flows, and collaborating with an executive team.
Due to NDA restrictions, I am unable to share the details and visuals of the artifacts developed across the course of three months, but don't hesitate to contact me: gaya3.muthu2002@gmail.com if you want to find out more!
REFLECTIONS & TAKEAWAYS
LESSONS LEARNED
| Don't just communicate, over-communicate!
-
In the beginning of my internship, I felt a bit daunted with asking questions regarding an assigned task and hesitated to voice my thoughts and doubts. However, I quickly learned in remote settings, it is not only necessary to communicate, but to over-communicate to avoid misunderstandings. This valuable lesson was the first of many I learned which helped me collaborate more effectively and gain confidence in my communicative abilities.
| Focus on the scope
-
Although I had a wonderful opportunity to exercise product strategy and execution, I found myself constantly questioning the design solution and reconsidering the scope. As a result, this process of questioning and repositioning enabled the team to break down an overwhelmingly large task into various smaller tasks, which enabled the work to progress faster and results delivered quicker.
| Prioritize the user
-
I found myself wearing multiple hats as one would with any start up, performing tasks both in and out of the scope of UX Design. However, I quickly realized although I am performing a diverse set of tasks, my role as a UX Designer is to always advocate for the user and keep the user at the center of the design process and maintaining this mindset enabled me to gain clarity and validate my decisions more effectively.
| Don't be afraid to ask for help
-
Shifting from conceptual projects to real client work was particularly challenging at first, because I realized there was so much I had yet to learn. Fortunately, with the guidance of my mentor and team, I was able to receive guidance on how to improve, access valuable resources to fill knowledge gaps, and make the most out of my time at YellowTin.
